Day 31 - 996km walked - location: cooparoo - status: last night in the gutter!!!

Well... It's not everyday you can say you've had to camp in the city you live in but now we can say we have. With the city a stones throw from here we are itching to run across that Goodwill bridge and are laying awake in anticipation.

But whoa! What a journey!!! It's the end of the 31st day we are tired but cosy in our tents... It's hard to beleive we have walked so far but then looking at the souls of my shoes I manage to convince myself we have. Almost 1000km in a month, it has been great! So I bet you want to hear all the drama, ok!

Matt tripped over, was harious wish you were there! Matt and I faught like dogs n cats, one stage breaking the physical barrier... FIGHT!!! But the Jack (head of Switzerland) steps in to mediate. We all have horrendous injuries, some worse than others. By the end of the day your muscles tighten up and you look quite disables as you struggle to get around, funny but painful hahaha

I got a bit teary the other day when I thought of how much mum supported all my endecours and how she would sometimes get more excited than I was about them. Then I saw her at the finish line tomorrow standing there full of pride as we walk across that bridge. To know that we have potentially reached over 2.5 million people within NSW (and hopefully more in QLD to come). Mum would jump and scream when ever I had any success and I know she would be jumping and screaming as I see this endevour a great success. This thought fills me with pride and comfort to know that I can share my love for her and greif of her loss with all those people, resulting in a mass suicide prevention movement.

I will write another upon the completeion of our trip! Thank you all for following and supporting us! And now for the thankyou's!!!

DAY 25 - 810km walked - Location: Ballina - Status: BRING IT HOME!!!!
So we made it to Ballina, we have less than 200km to go. The last couple of days have been very eventful, hitting a 38km, 45km day followed by a 43km our average was pretty good! Had a couple of fights on the way as well... but after 20 odd days together it's to be expected. All in all doing well, our bodies are partially holding up and in good spirits. We'll be home in less than a week!!!! Our planned finish is 11am on the 5th of August on the Good Will Bridge in Brisbane BE THERE!!!! hahaha
Last night we met an amazing group of people Kimba, Kryssy, Dave and Kat from Broadwater who kindly entertained us, fed us and shelted us for the night. After a night of conversation around red wine, cheese and cultered food... feeling a little spoilt Kimba put a question to us: whats the solution to suicide? The truth is it is very complex and doesn't have a single answer but the Reach Out program run by the Inspire Foundation is one of Australia's leading suicide preventers, so by raising awareness and letting people know about this program would hopefully have a best result as it is sitting at their finger tips for when they need it. The Inspire Foundation have it sorted as they run multiple programs with suicide prevention as their main goal, one of the other programs/resources is called Act Now www.actnow.com is all about dealing with relevant issues troubling the mental health of youths i.e. eating disorders. This programs aim is to deal with issues before they develop into further mental health issues which can lead to suicide. SO I beleive the Inspire Foundation are one of the most relevant solutions to suicide through the use of their programs.
Kimba shared a touching story about how he had lost a great mate Jeff who suffered from Bipolar which lead to his suicide. His passing had a huge impact on Kimba and the community that knew Jeff and continue to greive the loss of a great man, he then shared his appreciation for our commitment to this cause and whole heartedly put his support behind our walk by offering a generous donation, accomodation, shower and an awesome feed prepared by his wife Kryssy. THANK YOU!

Day 15: Half Way - 520km walked - 2million people reached

Over 2 weeks in... Status: and they this would be hard... Fair call :D

It's been almost a week since our last blog and WHAT A WEEK! We've had sand dunes, walking, seen the great lakes, health issues and doctor trips, a 60km day, got a new trolly, lost the new trolly, walked, met a dozen amazing people (of whom I will tell you about), live and pre-recorded radio interviews, a million news paper articles, walking, some complimentary accommodation due to peoples generosity, got caught in the rain... And then walked some more. We have walked a total of 520km since Sydney which puts us over half way! We went through Tea Gardens, Hawks nest, mungo brush, bulahdelah, taree, coopernook, kew, kempsey, macksville and nambucca. Hehe try saying that fast.

This is just an update will write the full blog in coffs harbour in 2days!!!! Stay posted and send us your feedback! Check out steps 4 survival on facebook and Twitter.

Day: 6, 195km covered, status: Well rested and raring to go (sick of protein bars)! Location: Nelson Bay.
CLOSING IN ON 20% completion of the journey!
FIRST of all I just really want to say what an amazing experience this has been to see such generosity and kindness from absolute strangers. It has been such an eye opener and we have a new found respect for mankind! (very dramatic hahaha)
It's been really rough the last couple of days but we've held together. Physically and mentally challenged to the enth degree. With our walking taking longer than expected we have ended up sleeping in some bizarre / beautiful places. On Day 4 we arrived in Newcastle at 11:30pm at night to sleep on a hill beside a railway track in what is apparently an unwaterproofed tent in the pouring rain HA! As you can imagine the moral wasn't the best. In the morning things changed with an awesome interview with Newcastle's ABC radio and an easy day off from marathon walking efforts.
We crossed the beautiful Hunter River to spend an afternoon in Stockton looking out over the ocean and recharging our walking batteries.
Day 5 took us on a mission to Nelson Bay that included a $2 feast for lunch at the NAIDOC Week Celebratory Festival that we passed on the way. We were farewelled by the local Indigenous elders and had blessings thrown at us for the rest of the journey.
I said I would speak about the personal journey more in this blog so I'll let you know where things are at. It has really been go go go on this expedition so far and we haven't had much time for reflection. It was in the nights before we left that I realised that the sole reason for me doing this was mum's passing, and I would be in a completely different part of life if it hadn't happened. This gave me clarity for the purpose on this journey which is to heal and help heal the community affected by similar situations and do our best to raise awareness for prevention of suicide to the best of our abilities i.e. Reach Out. So far it has been amazing the stories people have been sharing with about what this journey means for them. That part of it has been amazing, also speaking for myself but I can imagine the other boys are the same, there has been a lot of personal development happening. You can't walk 45km in a day without discipline and you can't sit down and take time to heal without peace, so this juggling act is slowly becoming an artform and becoming one of the most effective ways I have dealt with my grief. ANYWHO...

Day 1&2, 75 km covered, status: blistered broken and ready for bed. So yesterday we left the Sydney Opera House - the journey has begun! Just want to give a big shout out to the Inspire / Reach Out crew for a their support! And Mari and Eric for being so supportive and housing us for the last couple of days. So yesterday we started walking at 8:30am ish.. And arrived in Palm Beach at 8:30pm... We did stop for an hour or two during the day but... It was a massive day!!! I hit the wall 3/4 through the day... Ouch... Matt was pumping through it along with Jack but by the time we finished we were all hurting... Anyone got a new pair of feet I can borrow!!! The best thing out of the day was finding out our efforts had not gone unrewarded, the media picked up the story and ran with it. Channel 9, 10 in NSW, front page BrisbaneTimes and Page 5 of the Sun-Herald QLD edition. So that shows us that it's all worth while... Check out www.reachout.com for info on the awesome program we are promoting with this walk. So today we got up and surprisingly feeling good.. Except I was feeling pretty ill - slightly dehydrated... Learnt valuable lesson.. Drink water even when your not thirsty.. Set up camp in Terrigan, better morale today and this is an awesome spot so tomorrow should be a breeze. We have had great support from people along the way, like the guys from Outdoor Shack, Camping Gear, Coralong - Mark & Katrina for lunch! - the servo guy, newport ish - woody, Newport - Jenny & the birthday girl and customers from The Award winning Kincumber Bakery - and everone else who smiled and waved/honked! If any one want to make us a steps for survival flag or sydney to Brisbane flag that'd be awesome!!! You can send it to us at the closest post office.... So I'll be in touch and next time I will talk more about our personal jouney on this trip. For more info of our trip and to support or donate our cause, visit the Inspire's website. Take care, Pete Matt & Jack
